Summary of Workshop: The interactive poetry workshop will give participants the opportunity to get to know other members of the organization and participate in brainstorming activities for several different types of poems such as acrostics, biography poems, extended metaphors and form poetry. Guests are asked to bring a“gateway” poem along to the meeting – a poem or book of poetry that inspired your love of poetry or sparked your desire to begin writing. During the second half of the presentation, guests will be asked to develop one of the topics from the pre-writing activities, or choose another type of poem from a “Poetry Choice Board.” We will complete rough drafts, display our work, and engage in a “Gallery Walk” where we will have the opportunity to share and receive positive comments from other members/guests!

Presenter Bio: Barbara Dellinger – a 1985 graduate of Shippensburg University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in both Communications/Journalism and Fine Art. After working several years in the advertising arena, she went on to obtain her K-12 teaching certificate in 1999 from Wilson College, and later expanded her certification to include Middle School Language Arts. She has been teaching 8th grade English in the Big Spring School District since 2004, and has been advisor to both the middle school newspaper and literary magazine. She has recently connected with the Carlisle Poet’s Society through the Bosler Library in Carlisle, and is looking forward to getting to know others who share her passion for writing and responding to poetry.

Fall Conference Poetry Challenge: Write a poem about something that relates to the Year of the Rooster. Bring it to the conference and turn it in to Susan Vernon before the conference begins. A group of members will judge the poetry for a winner who will then be able to read the poem during the Open Mic portion of the program. A small token gift to the winner will also be received. Go with what’s in your heart!

The Year of the Rooster 2017

“Rooster years are rarely boring, so it will be a year with a lot of action.” We will see both drama and productivity. It favors those who put in the hard work and stick to a plan. This is another fire year and will be super-charged and infused with intensity. The Rooster sets the precedent of tirelessness, hope, and luck. The rooster respects those with strong opinions and good work ethic. So,” be thoughtful about what’s in your heart and go with it.”
