SIMILE Exercise submitted by Ann Copeland

Ann's inspiration for this exercise came from a reading by Yannis Ritsos at the Geraldine Dodge Poetry Festival, and based on the following lines:

"like the child separate of the ring of play
with glasses that looked like a bike

like a bike in a sun flooded countryside\

left against a tree-
the bike of a child who had died
."

EXERCISE:
Write a poem, and in it, include one image ( maybe a simile like "the bike" ), then expand upon that simile, like the poet did above, to give us a powerful image, something that might be impossible to explain any other way.
