A tercet is a complete poem of just three lines. It can be either rhymed or unrhymed. There is no specific meter.

There are three types of tercets:
1. An enclosed tercet uses the rhyme scheme of a,b,a with no specific meter.

2. A sicilian tercet is written in iambic pentameter with no specific rhyme scheme.

3. A triplet uses the rhyme scheme a,a,a with no specific meter.

Using three tercets in a sequence would be a tercet stanza.

An Irish Triad is a poem consisting of three tercets. Simialr to a tercet stanza, the tercets of an Irish Triad can be either rhymed or unrhymed.

There are two differences between a tercet stanza and an Irish Triad. In the Irish Triad the sound at the beginning of the first line is repeated as the sound at the beginning of the last line, and each tercet is a complete poem.
